What is the Nantucket Basket Barrel Lamp?
It's a smaller-scale table lamp with a tightly woven, barrel-shaped body set between cast bands. The base is 7.5" wide and 8.5" tall, and about 17.5" tall overall with a 12" shade. Its proportions come from the classic Nantucket basket: a full, rounded middle held between solid ends. The lamp comes with a 7" harp and finial, a switch on the cord, and a medium (E26) socket.
What inspired the design?
The design comes from the Nantucket lightship basket, which developed on the island over the nineteenth century. According to the Nantucket Historical Association, four elements define a lightship basket: it's woven on a mold, it has rattan staves and cane weavers, and it sits on a solid wood base. The name comes from the South Shoal Lightship off Nantucket, where crew members wove baskets to pass the long hours at sea.
The barrel connection runs deep. The upright ribs of a Nantucket basket are called staves, a word borrowed from barrel making. The basket's familiar swollen middle reflects that cooperage influence. Our lamp takes that banded, rounded silhouette and gives it a new use as a light.
The Nantucket Basket Barrel Lamp is inspired by this tradition. It's not a lightship basket, and we don't present it as one.
Why does each lamp look slightly different?
The woven body is made from a natural material, so color and texture vary a little from lamp to lamp. One may be slightly warmer in tone, another slightly more varied in texture. These differences come from the material itself, not from inconsistent making. Our product photographs show the lamps accurately, but expect your lamp to differ slightly from the one pictured.
What finishes are available?
- Natural: The woven body with cast bands in a natural wood finish. Soft and tonal, and easy to place in a light or neutral room.
- Walnut: The same woven body with cast bands in a dark walnut wood finish. More contrast and definition, and well suited to rooms with darker woods, leather or deeper colors.
Which shade should I choose?
Both shade options measure 7" at the top, 12" at the bottom and 8" on the slant, which suits the lamp's proportions.
- 12" Fermoie Plain Linen in Ivory: A gathered pleat linen shade, handmade in England. It gives a soft, even glow, and its smooth fabric is a quiet contrast to the texture of the weave.
- 12" Natural Grasscloth: A woven grasscloth shade finished with matching tape trim. It repeats the natural texture of the base and suits rooms with layered natural materials such as rattan, rush, jute or linen.
- No shade: For anyone who already has a shade in mind. We recommend a shade with a 12" bottom, or 14" if you prefer a larger shade.
Where does it work best?
The lamp is scaled for places where a smaller lamp is needed: side tables, consoles, desks and bedside tables. It works as well in a city apartment as in a house on the coast, and it's sized to be used in pairs. For a warm, even light, we recommend a warm white LED bulb equivalent to 40 or 60 watts.
